Meet the Family Law team – Richard Scott

2 January 2024

In our latest meet the team series, we introduce you to Richard Scott, Partner and Head of Family at our Cardiff office. Richard shares why he decided on a career in law and his most memorable moment.

1. What first attracted you to a career in law?

I was studying for my A levels and after my late shift in a local pub, I would dash home to watch the cult 90’s BBC2 series called “This Life” which was all about young aspiring lawyers who were trying to forge a career in the legal profession. It portrayed a young lawyers life as dynamic, exciting and a bit rock and roll. Suddenly I was hooked, deciding that I wanted to follow suit.

2. What type of legal advice do you provide? And to what sorts of client?

I act for all sorts of clients within family law but mainly separating couples in relation to Divorce, Financial Remedy, and Cohabitation Disputes. I also specialise in drafting Pre-Nuptial Agreements.

3. What is your most memorable legal experience? And why?

This case involved the abduction of a child, crossing international borders and included instances of parental alienation. I was acting for the Mother and the Father refused to return the child following a Summer holiday break in Northern Ireland. The father had influenced the child to fabricate accusations against the maternal family to evade returning to Wales. After several court hearings and a lot of assistance from the Children’s Guardian appointed by CAFCASS, who went to visit the child in Northern Ireland, we managed to finalise the case with the child returning home to mother’s care.

4. What is your number 1 top tip for clients?

Listen and trust the advice you are being given.
